Mass transit is a high impact sustainable solution for cities to combat the effects of global climate change, limit pollution, and reduce the use of fossil fuels. These networks move millions of people each day and take them out of cars, and into trains, light rail or buses, reducing emissions and greenhouse gasses. Mass transportation networks are becoming more sustainable in operations, design, and maintenance. Many are looking at ways to reduce their emissions and carbon footprint.

Over the last decade, many sustainability initiatives were built into mass transit infrastructure, facilities, and vehicles. Thomas Abdallah’s presentation will examine many of these initiatives including energy efficiency and storage, renewable energy, green infrastructure, materials conservation, and ecological conservation. Many of these sustainability initiatives were designed to maximize energy efficiency, improve indoor environments, use recycled and reusable materials, achieve waste-reduction by diverting construction and demolition debris from landfills, prevent pollution, conserve water, save natural resources, and adapt to climate change.
